I beg that you will consider

I beg that you will consider coming to the Tibetan Refugee settlement here at Mundgod, Karnataka State - 581 411, South India. I know that there are others but we are one of the most undeveloped settlements around. Attempts to get a high speed connection for this area from the various Indian companies have been halted by the common stupidity and corruption of India. What you have done up north seems like a workable solution here.

If you want to see some photos of the area click here

Also I am teaching some intro computer skills classes and would appreciate any teaching resources for curriculum you may have.

Sincerely
Ten Samten

Hi Tenzin Samten,

Hi Tenzin Samten,

We are so glad that someone from Mundgod actually posted something here. I wasn't expecting this. My name is Phuntsok and I am from camp no. 2 h#31, Mundgod. We do have plans to install one at Mundgod. We have an International Wireless Summit titled AirJaldi Summit, 2006 at Dharamsala. Here's the URL summit.airjaldi.com. We have also plans to invite people from the Tibetan settlements in Karnataka to the AirJaldi Summit on the condition that they will be involved in the setting up and maintaing the Mesh Network in their respective settlement.

Here's my contact number: 09418335156 (please give me a call to discuss this) or you can also email me at phuntsok@tibtec.org or yahel ben-david, our CTO via this web-site

For Wireless Ghana to be

For Wireless Ghana to be represented at the conference we would need funding for travel expenses.

A member of the Wireless Ghana team could lead an extensive workshop on setting up low-cost, low-resource mesh nodes with an emphasis on longer distance bridges (5km+). We could build two nodes out of old, broken computer parts (that we obtain on location) and demonstrate a working network built in less than a day.

Hi Tenzin Samten, I would

Hi Tenzin Samten,

I would love to support you in your quest for Internet access, however I must also protest about your words "the common stupidity and corruption of India", where there is a will there truly is a way :). My current location is Bangalore and I can get things done at Hubli as well.

The easiest way to get bandwidth would be Airtel/Tata VSAT which can then be distributed over wireless mesh in your community, this is the fastest and the most expensive way to get things done. We have executed this at BR Hills (80 km from Bangalore).

The cheapest way would be get bandwidth from BSNL or Airtel DSL from Hubli or the closest DSL capable BSNL exchange and send it over the wireless mesh to Mundgod. The distance between Mundgod and Hubli being 47 kilometres, it can hardly be called a weekend project, but can be done, also involves relationship building and substantial planning on the way to Mundgod.

The VSAT option requires a budget of about 60,000 monthly recurring for 256kbps unlimited access(at most) (investment of 1 lakh) and the mesh from hubli would take some time but will be considerably cheaper on a recurring basis. The terrain from Hubli-Mundgod is mostly flat and we should get good connectivity over the mesh.

My expertise with the mesh is limited ( I have just got my first batch of WRT54GLs and am setting up a Bangalore mesh team).

Please have a look at your budget before you pick your choice.

Request Yahel/Phuntsok Dorjee to comment on the best options.

Regards
David
